Do you like the drinks you get at those
'smoothie' places, but wonder how you can make them at home? Believe
it or not, it's actually pretty easy. If you have milk, yogurt, fruit
and a blender, you're well on your way. Here's the recipe I've used.
Simple Strawberry Banana Smoothie
1 cup frozen strawberries (I used
fresh)
2 small bananas, chunked
1 cup milk
8 oz. (about one container) plain or
vanilla yogurt
Mix together in a blender for about two
minutes (or thoroughly mixed) and serve. A nice variation includes a cup each of apples and peaches.
I made
this recipe this morning, and it took me all of ten minutes.
That's *including* the cleanup afterward! To give you an idea of how
well it turned out, my picky-eater husband downed his in about five
minutes! Mine is still sitting next to me; I'm drinking it slowly so
that I can make it last! If you want those 'protein powders' or
whatever that they mix in at Planet Smoothie or Smoothie King, they
can be found at most health- or whole-foods stores.
You can alter this recipe to fit your
particular tastes. For instance, I added a touch of honey to take
away from the tartness of the strawberries. My brother once added in
peaches, pineapples, orange juice, vodka, rum...I don't remember the
rest, but may have been the point. Anyway. let's just say it was really good! He also used about a cup of
ice, which is another idea. Someone else I know thought it would be
a good idea to add bacon grease, but that's just a little *too* weird
for me! If you don't want to buy a lot of fresh fruits, you could
probably find some batches or concentrates in the freezer section of
the grocery store. Next time, I'm going to try adding cherries to the
mix. I'm also wondering if it would work well with a shot of that
chocolate liqueur I've had in the back of the refrigerator for
forever...okay, I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's just say that this
is a good recipe to make by itself, but you can also use it as a
'base' for your own smoothie creations.
Now you have an idea of how to make
awesome fruit smoothies at home. It's good for breakfast or a snack,
although you don't really need an excuse! It's just a great way to treat
yourself. After all, you do deserve it!
